Built in 1871 as a market hall and meeting place the Shire Hall, now a grade 2 listed building, was given to the town in 1942 under the form of a trust by Charles Briggs.

Over the years the hall has seen many uses, perhaps too numerous to mention. Under the auspices of the trustees the last few years has seen a tremendous amount of time and effort going in to raising funds to provide a venue of which the residents of Howden can be justifiably proud.

The upstairs hall can now offer a dedicated bar/meeting area, a permanantly sited stage, raked seating for 170, professional sound and lighting and specially built p.a tower.The capicity is 200 without the raked seating.

The most recent work involved the extension of the library into the downstairs hall. Current useage of the hall includes karate, yoga, pilate, childrens dance lessons, a regular Friday market and an ongoing programme of music, comedy and theatre provided by Howden Live.

The very basis of the Shire Halls existence is about use by the community, the hourly rates for the hall reflect this, they are:
Meeting room, £6 per hour.
Regular use, £12 per hour.
Charity/community use, £14 per hour.
Commercial use, £18 per hour.
