SALLY DOHERTY 2pm
This Sheffield-based young singer has just released a new album, Second Time Around, following on from her debut Foolish Heart. She slides seamlessly between English, Portuguese and Spanish to deliver a range of styles from gentle ballads, Brazilian bossa nova and samba to swing and Cuban boleros. Sally has worked with Peter King, Neil Yates and Alan Barnes and has opened for Cleo Laine and Alex Wilson. She will be performing in Howden with Piero Tucci, Colin Elliot, and Phil Johnson.

JONATHAN GEE 3.15pm
While known mainly as a distinguished and much sought-after jazz pianist on the British and European jazz scene Jonathan Gee has adroitly developed a reputation as a stylish pianist-singer of jazz standards. Since winning the 1991 Wire Best Newcomer Award Gee has recorded six albums specialising in trio formats under his own name and countless albums where he has provided unmatched support as accompanist. We are privileged to have him lead the resident trio (with Steve Rose and Dave Wickins) for the Howden festival and to have the all too rare pleasure of hearing him sing.

SANDI RUSSELL 4.30pm
A native New Yorker, now based in the UK, Sandi Russell has sung in the Big Apples most prestigious clubs and has worked with jazz luminaries such as Lionel Hampton, Roy Eldridge, Ellis Larkins, Beaver Harris, Jean Toussaint and with top vocal artists, Johnny Hartman and Arthur Prysock. A melodically inventive and superb scat singer, Sandi is a soulful and breathtaking performer in the truly authentic African-American tradition. Her CDs recorded in the UK include Incandescent and Sweet Thunder. Sandi will be joined for her Howden performance by the superlative John Horler, Andy Cleyndert, and Steve Brown.

TRUDY KERR 7pm
Popular Australian jazz singer and educator, Trudy Kerr employs a broad repertoire of standards and contemporary compositions to bring originality of thought and subtle swing to their interpretation. Her five albums have been received to wide acclaim, her most recent boldly conceived and brilliantly executed, Cloudburst, featuring her vocalese over classic jazz instrumentals. Her most recent CD project, Jazz for Juniors, has been designed to capture the jazz audiences of the future. She brings her top-class band of Tom Cawley, Geoff Gascoigne, and Steve Brown.

CHRISTINE TOBIN 8.15pm
This highly-regarded Irish singer, admired for her attractively husky and languorous sound (The Tobin voice is simply peerless states Jazzwise), covers a jazz repertoire, which draws on Irish folk, world and Latin influences. Her many recordings with Babel Records focus largely on her own melodically complex compositions, but she is also known for her distinctive take on jazz standards. For Howden Christine is accompanied by her long-standing musical collaborators, Liam Noble, Dave Whitford, and Simon Lee.

NORMA WINSTONE 9.30pm
Is the undoubted doyenne of British jazz singing, known within the profession for her musical integrity and forging a distinctive direction in European vocal jazz. From the 1960s onwards she became known for developing an individual wordless instrumental sound and has worked in settings from duo to jazz orchestra. Although now returned to a more orthodox style and much admired for her lyric writing and her sensitive readings of the standard repertoire, Winstone continues to create a variety of intriguing musical blends. She has worked and recorded seminal albums with John Taylor, Kenny Wheeler, Mike Garrick, Jimmy Rowles, and Fred Hersch amongst others. She is accompanied at Howden by the Jonathan Gee Trio.

APRIL BARROWS 8.15pm
Appealing American singer, based in Nashville, who writes her own beautifully crafted songs in a style and manner similar to the great American songsmiths of the mid twentieth century. Her first shot at national recognition came with the release of her debut album, My Dream Is You, in 1996. Although the album received critical acclaim, record company problems curtailed its potential. With her follow-up release, to ensure complete control of her recording career, Barrows formed her own company, Mellotone Records. Along with writing her own material, Barrow collaborates with her long-time musical associate, guitarist and Producer, David Hungate, who will be joining her in Howden with his band.

IAN SHAW 9.30pm
A fixture at Ronnie Scotts, winner of a Perrier Award, nominated Best British Jazz Singer by the Guardian and in America voted Downbeat Artist Deserving Wider Recognition in 2001, Ian Shaw is the UKs foremost male jazz singer. Every year his baritone to falsetto voice is a regular feature of practically every prestigious jazz festival in the UK, including our own Howden Festival last year where his tour de force piano and vocal performance demanded a return invitation for this year

LOUISE GIBBS
Is one of the UKs most respected jazz teachers, both as style and improvisation specialist and voice technician. She is currently Associate Professor of Music at Leeds College of Music. While steeped in the standard repertoire, as a performer Louise is keen to promote original work and makes improvisation central to her approach. She recently premiered Kathy Dysons settings of the poems of Pablo Neruda with the Octet M8; Tomlinson and Evans Southern Stories Project; and sang both high and low voices in the UK premiere of Duke Ellingtons suite Drum is a Woman. She has just released her 4th album, Everybodys Song But Our Own, a duo recording with celebrated US pianist Kirk Lightsey.

Jazz Factor - the showcase-masterclass for emerging talent from the colleges - was the most exciting innovation of the 2007 festival format. Jazz Factor last year gave us four accomplished performances from the upcoming generation of singers: Emilia Martensson, Fini Bearman, Cherie Gears, and Genevieve Arnold. The response from the audience was overwhelmingly enthusiastic, as much for the highly informative or often contentious comments of the panel members as for the performances. One festival-goer commented that Jazz Factor was a lesson in what really matters in jazz singing. I didnt know there was so much to it!
In 2008 we have another set of four singers representing the final year jazz programmes at Brunel University, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Leeds College of Music, and Middlesex University, who each will perform a 15-minute set for you, the public audience, and a panel of commentators.
The panel for 2008 includes American singer- songwriter April Barrows, US Producer and musician, David Hungate, and Jazz Singer-Teacher, Louise Gibbs. They will offer constructive pointers on the singers performances and advice on how to advance their professional careers and artistic development
